I teach it like I do it…

by Jeff S on June 21, 2010

Today, it is very popular to get into covert or conversational hypnosis. I have often been asked to teach a class on conversational hypnosis. But that is not how I do hypnosis.

I am a direct, authoritative hypnotist. So, that is what I teach. My workshops consist of training in how to do hypnosis in the most direct manner possible.

While it is true that I do use conversational hypnosis in certain situations, once an actual session has begun, I am very direct and very effective.

This is why I think that if you are looking for someone to teach you hypnosis you should find someone who teaches what they personally use. I may, in the future, teach a class on using conversational hypnosis as a sales tool. That is how I use it, and that is the only way I would feel comfortable teaching it.

Those who use conversational hypnosis with their clients SHOULD be teaching conversational hypnosis, as this would only makes sense. Teachers should teach what they know and use. If they are Ericksonian in their methods, that is what they should teach. If they are ‘Elman’ in practice, THAT is what they should teach.

One caveat… be sure that what you are taught is something that you can use to do it YOUR way. If the instructor is attempting to make his students a carbon copy [wow, how's that for dating myself] of himself, I personally wouldn’t trust him.

You learn what works from the trainer… then play with it [there I go again with rule #2] until you can do it YOUR way… until you are completely comfortable doing hypnosis in your own style and manner. Play, play, play, until you make it your own… then REALLY play!

… all for now…
