What if they are just pretending?

by Jeff S on June 21, 2010

I get asked all the time by students in my workshops and by people online, “How do you know if the person is just pretending?” My basic answer is always the same, AAH.

That stands for Always Assume Hypnosis. I know that sounds a bit arrogant, but I have found that it is the perfect mindset for hypnotist.

Before I begin – whether on the street, or in the classroom, or in a session with a client – I assume that hypnosis will happen. I assume that the person in front of me will be going into hypnosis and that it will be a wonderful experience for them.

That carries my intent right up to the moment when I say sleep. Once I say sleep, I assume they are in hypnosis from that point on, and proceed as though it is ALWAYS true. And because I assume that, my intent remains constant. Intent is everything.

By assuming hypnosis right from the beginning I keep my focus where it belongs. I am not creating distractions for myself by wasting time or energy worrying about whether or not the subject is in hypnosis.

Okay, you say, “What about when their head pops up and they say it’s not working?”

If you will assume hypnosis right from the start, this will be so rare that you simply won’t have the worry about it. But, on those rare occasions when it does happen, you do what any good hypnotist does; you reassure them that everything is just fine and that they simply have too much on their mind at this time to do this. But, that you will be happy to do it another time.

I hope this has been helpful. See you next time…
